The event was attended by State Secretary Gulshara Abdykalikova, Supreme Court Chairman Zhakip Asanov, Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights Kuanysh Sultanov, representatives of the diplomatic corps, civil society and the academic community.

In his speech, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Kairat Abdrakhmanov recalled that in 2009, Kazakhstan extended an open invitation to all the mandate holders of special procedures of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), and on a regular base receives mandate holders. In May 2019, the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism will visit Kazakhstan on an official visit.

“Tasks for the near future to further improve the national human rights protection system are outlined in the State of the Nation Address by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. According to this program document, new measures will be taken to ensure the rule of law, humanize administrative and criminal legislation, continue to reform the judicial system, strengthen the fight against corruption, take specific measures in the field of civil, social and economic and cultural rights," the Minister said.

Kazakhstan submitted its candidature for membership of the UNHRC for 2022 to 2024. The country was previously part of the Council from 2013 to 2015.

The participants of the meeting noted that since independence, Kazakhstan has firmly and consistently supported efforts to build a democratic, secular and fair state, ensuring the rule of law, reforming the judicial system, protecting the civil, social, economic and cultural rights of citizens, and humanising administrative and criminal legislation.

The active human rights policy of the state played a significant role in the success of Kazakhstan's campaign to the UN Security Council and determined the tone of the country's membership in this body. Great attention is paid in promoting the Code of Conduct for the achievement of a world free of terrorism. This is one of Kazakhstan's contributions to the implementation of inalienable human rights, including, above all, the right to life.

Brazil’s version of Trump: why is it a «wake-up call» for the world?

A racist, a homophobe, a misogynist, a pro-torturer. Because of the profane outbursts and verbal abuse, he has earned such an image and was even considered as a political clown. Once he insulted lawmaker claiming that she was too ugly to be worth of raping. What is more, he said that he’d rather have a dead son than a gay one. Therefore, analysts concluded that Brazil has elected the most extremist president among democratic countries. So why did Brazil decide to make «really radical shift»? How did such an «extreme» and «unpleasant» figure become a president?
