Today the lower chamber of Parliament held hearings on the introduction of a single standard of the Kazakh language on the Latin alphabet, reports the Press Office of Mazhilis.

The Chairman of the Mazhilis Nurlan Nigmatulin named the factors of the integral process of the transition of the Kazakh language to the Latin alphabet. The Speaker of the Mazhilish noted that language is always the main unifying principle of any nation. He also emphasized the close attention paid by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to the development of the Kazakh language.

"As you know, the Head of State in his programmatic article "Course towards the future: modernization of Kazakhstan’s identity” identified a phased transition of the Kazakh language to the Latin alphabet as one of the key priorities. This is a truly historic milestone in the spiritual and cultural development of the country," said the Mazhilis Chairman.

Further, Speaker Nigmatulin emphasized the focus of the reform on increasing the global competitiveness of Kazakhstan, accelerated integration into the scientific, educational, technological and communication space of the world. At the same time, he marked out a balanced and thorough approach to the issue of transition to the Latin alphabet, as well as systematic and consistent nature of all the work.

According to the Mazhilis Speaker, the modernization of the Kazakh language is necessary to reveal all its potential - not only as a means of communication, but also a powerful factor of spiritual revival, strengthening of national identity. It also covers the immutability of language policy.

- The transition to the Latin alphabet is primarily aimed at reforming the Kazakh language and spelling rules, which will allow us to establish a correspondence between the phonetics of the language and its graphics. The introduction of the Latin alphabet is only intended to solve internal problems of the development of the state language. The firm, consistent position of Elbasy on this issue should help everyone to understand that the Russian language as a world language with powerful cultural and historical roots in our country will continue to play an important role in the life of Kazakhstani society. The state will also continue the steady implementation of the policy on the development of trilingualism, - said the Speaker.

Mr. Nigmatullin also mentioned the systemic and stage-by-stage nature of the ongoing reform. According to him, teachers, various groups of the population will go through training courses on the new alphabet.

"The transition to the Latin alphabet will be carried out dynamically, but it does not accept rush and ill-considered forcing events. Only by this way we will be able to ensure the high-quality implementation of the instructions by  Head of State and will make Kazakhstan an example of the successful conduct of language modernization, - said the Mazhilis Speaker.

To the end of his speech, Mr. Nigmatullin invited all institutions of civil society to participate in the discussion of the unified standard for Kazakh language on the Latin alphabet.
