The Foreign Affairs Ministry of Kazakhstan rejects speculation about interference in the internal affairs of Kyrgyzstan and attempts to influence the presidential elections in this country

“... The Kazakh side expresses its extreme surprise at the reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic to the meeting of Nazarbayev with one of the candidates for the Presidency of the Kyrgyz Republic on September 19, 2017.

Meetings of the Head of State with prominent politicians and leaders of political parties of different countries, at their request, take place on a regular basis and fully comply with international practice. At the same time, such events are open, transparent and widely covered in the media.

Therefore, the Head of State held a similar bilateral meeting with another candidate for the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, former Prime Minister Sooronbay Zheenbekov in Astana on August 14, 2017.

In addition, we are perplexed by the incorrect interpretation of the President’s statements by the Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the meetings, the President of Kazakhstan did not support any particular candidate for the Presidency of the Kyrgyz Republic. Moreover, during the negotiations with the Kyrgyz representatives in Astana and Almaty, the Head of State expressed readiness to interact effectively with any elected President of the Kyrgyz Republic, to whom the brotherly Kyrgyz people will give credibility.

On Wednesday, September 20, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Charge d'Affaires of the Kyrgyz Republic in Kazakhstan to officially hand a response note from the Kazakh side to the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry with the following content.

In this regard, we resolutely reject the conjectures of the Kyrgyz side regarding interference in internal affairs and attempts to influence the choice of the people of the Kyrgyz Republic.

We believe that such a reaction of the Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs does counter effect to the spirit of traditionally fraternal relations between the two peoples and the Treaty on Allied Relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic, to which the Kazakhstan party remains committed"

It is important to recall that Kyrgyzstan sent a note of protest to the Kazakh MFA after the meeting of Nazarbayev with one of the candidates for the presidency of the Kyrgyz Republic. The Foreign Ministry of the neighboring republic regards the last meeting as an attempt to influence the choice of the people of Kyrgyzstan.
