The day when the first Kazakh flew to space

On October of 1991, a Kazakh astronaut Toktar Aubakirov flew to the Space station as a part of an international crew. After a couple of months, Kazakhstan took its independence.

Tokhtar Aubakirov was born on July 27 of 1946, in the Karkaraly district of Karaganda region. He graduated from the Armavir Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots, and then the Moscow Aviation Institute.

Toktar Aubakirov became the first pilot in the Soviet Union, who made a non-stop flight with two refueling in the air to the North Pole in 1988 by MIG-31. In 1989, he was the first to fly into the air and landed on the aircraft carrier. He tested more than 50 new types of jet aircraft.

In 1990, he joined the cosmonauts' team. In 1991, he began training at the Cosmonaut Training Center. On October 2 of the same year, he started out into space as a cosmonaut-explorer of the Soyuz TM-13 spacecraft. Tokhtar Aubakirov together with the members of the international crew conducted biotechnological, metallurgical, medical research, as well as scientific and research work in the Aral territory.

The team photographed from the space station the process of salt storms occurrence in the Aral Sea and the spread of harmful aerosols on the territories of Kazakhstan and Russia.

The first Kazakh astronaut contributed to the development of military service, science, and technology of Kazakhstan and made a good career in the Government.
