20 years since Akmola became the Kazakh capital

October 20, 1997, President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree according to which from December 10, 1997, Akmola becomes the capital of Kazakhstan. Six months later on May 6, 1998, the city was given a new name – Astana.

The decision to move the capital from Almaty to the center of Kazakhstan was made on July 6, 1994. That is why July 6 is considered the Day of the capital. The initiator of the capital’s relocation was Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Then the population of the city was only about 290 thousand people. Akmola had great potential and growth potential.

On September 15, 1995, the President signed the decree “On the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, where he gave the order to form the State Commission for the organization of work on the movement of higher and central authorities to Akmola.

One of the first constructions in the new capital was – Baiterek, which now attracts more and more tourists. Its author is the Kazakh architect Akmyrza Rustembekov. The height of the building is 97 meters, with the ball crowning the construction, 105 meters.

Astana began to change rapidly. Especially the left bank of the Ishim River. In addition, it has become not just a capital, but also a place for international meetings, negotiations, and various summits.

The Palace of Peace and Harmony, also known as the Pyramid, a construction by a British architect Norman Foster, is specially built to hold the Congresses of Leaders of World Traditional Religions. It was a construction project of. Every three years Astana becomes a place of the unity of various religions, ethnos, and cultures.

Since 1997, the population of Astana has more than tripled. As of November 1, 2017, 1,026,181 people officially reside in the capital. Moreover, 70-80 children are born every day in the perinatal centers of the capital.

For 20 years, the area of the city has increased by almost 500 square kilometers.

This year Astana held the international fair EXPO-2017.
