Kazakhstan Participates UNSP’s Open Debate on the Situation in Afghanistan

Kazakhstan’s permanent representative Kairat Umarov took part in the debate from the Kazakh side.

The participants of the meeting noted the complicated situation in Afghanistan, the increase in the number of terrorist acts, the growth of drug production and the presence of the ISIS militants in the north of the country.

At the same time, the debaters emphasized the importance of measures taken by Afghanistan’s Government and the international community to stabilize the situation in the country, national reconciliation, and economic development, protect and promote women's rights, qualitative preparation and holding presidential and parliamentary elections in the next two years.

Most of the states expressed their gratitude to Kazakhstan as the first member of the UN Security Council from the countries in Central Asia for actively drawing the attention of the Security Council to the issues of security and development in Afghanistan and the Central Asian region, which contributed to a better understanding of the current situation in the region.

The Kazakh delegation stated that close regional economic cooperation between the countries will facilitate the involvement of Afghan citizens in peaceful activities and, thereby, reduce their participation in armed groups and the production of drugs. This will positively influence the security situation in the country and in the region as a whole.

K. Omarov noted that Kazakhstan is a firm supporter of regional integration and invests in the creation of transport infrastructure, provides humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

The meeting reaffirmed the firm commitment of the international community to assist Afghanistan in achieving peace and prosperity in that country.
