The money will help to stop desertification and salinization in Balkhash region.

‘We will systematize the work of the Ile-Balkhash basin in the Almaty region so that Balkhash does not repeat the fate of the Aral Sea. It can help to stop the salinization process and use pastures near Balkhash more efficiently, deploying cattle for four seasons’, said the Director of the Institute of Ecology and Sustainable Development Kuralay Karibaeva.

At the beginning of the year, environmentalists in the Karagandy region warned about shrinking of Lake Balkhash. According to experts, it is facilitated by swamping and clogging of its river tributaries with reeds and household rubbish.

Besides Kazakhstan, the Global project fund six Central Asian countries. The total amount of the fund allocated for those countries are $12 million. Each country can invest two million dollars. For example, in 2016-2017 to clean the waterways in the Almaty region the fund provided about 370 million tenge.

Recall, the Global Environment Facility was established to help tackle planet’s most pressing environmental problems in 1992.
