At the meeting, issues of strengthening cooperation with IOM in the management of migration processes, illegal migration control, human trafficking, as well as combating violence against migrants of any status were discussed.

For reference: the Republic of Kazakhstan joined the IOM as a full member in December 2002.

The Office of the IOM was opened in Almaty in November 1997. Since 1999, the Organization's office has operated in Astana.

The Government approved the Concept of the Migration Policy of Kazakhstan for 2017-2021. Since December 1998, Kazakhstan officially joined the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol.

September 19, 2016, International Organization for Migration joined the UN.

Kazakhstan and IOM are also actively cooperating within the framework of the Almaty process – the regional consultative process in the field of migration for Central Asian countries and the region, the dialogue platform in Central Asia on international migration and refugee protection. The Almaty process includes 7 member states: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Turkmenistan. Iran and Pakistan have the observer status. In September 2016, the leadership in the Almaty process was transferred to the Kyrgyz Republic.
