Minister of Healthcare Yelzhan Birtanov participates in 71st World Health Assembly in Geneva

The 71st World Health Assembly (WHA71) started on May 21 at the Palace of Nations in Geneva. Over 2 thousand representatives of WHO member states and international agencies are taking part in the event, reports primeminister.kz.

In the course of the Assembly, the issues of holding the WHO Global Conference, timed to the 40th anniversary of the Alma-Ata Declaration on Primary Health Care, were discussed. The event will be held in Astana on October 25-26. At the same time, within the framework of WHA71, Ministers of Healthcare of the CIS countries held a meeting on strengthening cooperation in healthcare, exchange of the best practices between their countries. The policies of the countries on key areas of the WHA71 program, as well as the role of the Alma-Ata Declaration in the development of primary health care in the world were discussed.

Speaking to delegations from more than 190 countries, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus highlighted the importance of the WHO Global Conference.

"The Global Conference will help mobilize the political will of the WHO mamber countries to implement the main provisions of the 1978 Alma-Ata Declaration further," said Tedros Ghebreyesus.

It should be noted that for the first time the representative of Kazakhstan was elected as Deputy Chairman of the WHA71. It was Minister of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yelzhan Birtanov.

"It is very important to rethink the view on the future of primary health care at the Global Primary Health Care Conference in Astana on October 25-26, 2018," said Minister of Healthcare of Kazakhstan, Yelzhan Birtanov.

In their turn, the heads of the CIS country delegations expressed interest in the exchange of ideas and practices in the field of improving the quality of medical care, health care digitization, and exchange of data on medical care provided to CIS citizens who move their place of work and residence within the CIS.

At the same time, before the opening of the Assembly on the basis of the headquarters of the World Health Organization in Geneva, Minister of Healthcare of Kazakhstan, Yelzhan Birtanov met with the WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus.

The parties discussed preparations for the WHO and UNICEF Global Conference on Primary Health Care (PHC) and Kazakhstan's initiative on adopting the final document of the Conference — a new World Declaration on PHC that meets the challenges of our time. Minister Y. Birtanov expressed his gratitude to Dr. Ghebreyesus for the dynamic and successful partnership between Kazakhstan and WHO. In his turn, Dr. Ghebreyesus supported all the proposed initiatives of Kazakhstan and wished success in preparing for the Global Conference.
