As of June 26, 2018, 381 people applied to participate in the competition for the Bolashak scholarship, 222 of them were registered and 159 were rejected because of the incompleteness of the documents submitted, or with inconsistencies with the selection rules of applicants and for other reasons.

In addition, the vice minister of education and science said that to enhance further the program's effectiveness for the upcoming five-year period, a number of important activities are planned:

To create favorable conditions for participation in competitive selection, it is planned to introduce online testing procedures at the regional level;

For qualitative selection of applicants, it is planned to increase the requirement for knowledge of the English language for applicants for a master's degree to IELTS 6.0 or higher for all quota categories, except for the category "engineering and technical workers" — IELTS 5.5.
