A High-level Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly will be convened on 6 September by President of the General Assembly H.E. Miroslav Lajcak to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests.

He, together with UN Secretary-General H.E. António Guterres and Executive Secretary of the Organization of the Treaty on the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Dr. Lassino Zerbo will address the delegations. A special guest will be Kazakh prominent artist Karipbek Kuyukov, the ATOM Project Honorary Ambassador, who is a victim of nuclear tests. He is a living witness of the horrific effects of such explosions.

The meeting will focus on measures to establish a ban on nuclear tests to aim for a world free of nuclear weapons. There will be an exchange of views on the current situation in the world in the face of continuing threats of nuclear tests. The International Day against Nuclear Tests has been celebrated informally by the UN since 2010, following the General Assembly resolution 64/35 adopted in December 2009 at the initiative of Kazakhstan. Following the adoption of resolution 72/51 the observance of this day is now a formal platform of the UN.

The deliberations will be broadcast live on the UN website: http://webtv.un.org/ with translation in all official UN languages.
