Olympic boxing qualifiers in Wuhan canceled

Regional qualifying rounds for the Tokyo Olympics' boxing events that were slated to be held in the central Chinese city of Wuhan have been canceled. 

The Organizing Committee of the Qualifying boxing matches for Asia and Oceania for the 2020 Olympic Games that were set to take place in China’s Wuhan sent a letter to accredited participants about the cancellation of the event, Kazakhstan Boxing Federation reports.

"Due to an outbreak of pneumonia caused by a new coronavirus, we have decided to cancel these competitions for the sake of your safety and health," the report said.

The international Olympic Committee which manages the selection of boxers for the Tokyo Games, should name the new venue and time of the licensed tournament.

On January 22, a meeting of the World health organization will be held to discuss measures to combat the outbreak of pneumonia.

According to Chinese authorities, nine people have died from this disease and 440 infected people have been registered.
