MES plans to raise the requirements for applicants for Bolashak scholarship

Vice Minister of Education and Science Talgat Yeshenkulov at a briefing in the press center of the Government spoke on the new quality of education within the framework of the seventh direction of the President's Address "New Opportunities under the Fourth Industrial Revolution" and the 25th anniversary of the Bolashak program.

According to Yeshenkulov, 10,096 specialists were trained for 25 years of the Bolashak program, including more than 5 thousand specialists with a master’s degree, about 3 thousand — bachelors, more than 300 — PhD, postgraduates and interns, and also about 1,800 — trainees.

Of the total number of graduates, 53% completed training in humanitarian specialties, 37.8% — engineering, 7.4% — medical and 1.8% — creative specialties. More than 40% of graduates work in the real sector of the economy, 20% — in the sphere of education and science and more than 7% — in the field of medicine and public health.

"At the moment, there are 1,255 scholarship holders. Taking into account the needs of the real sector of the economy, the list of priority specialties for 2018, which includes 160 specialties, has been updated," Yeshenkulov said.

For the current year, the maximum number of scholarships is 555. Deadlines for accepting documents: from March 9 to August 31, 2018. According to the results of the meeting of the Republican Commission for the Training of Personnel Abroad of May 24, 2018, the Bolashak scholarship was awarded to 67 applicants. As of June 26, 2018, 381 people applied to participate in the competition for the Bolashak scholarship, 222 of them were registered and 159 were rejected because of the incompleteness of the documents submitted, or with inconsistencies with the selection rules of applicants and for other reasons.

In addition, the vice minister of education and science said that to enhance further the program's effectiveness for the upcoming five-year period, a number of important activities are planned:

To create favorable conditions for participation in competitive selection, it is planned to introduce online testing procedures at the regional level;

For qualitative selection of applicants, it is planned to increase the requirement for knowledge of the English language for applicants for a master's degree to IELTS 6.0 or higher for all quota categories, except for the category "engineering and technical workers" — IELTS 5.5.

In connection with the increase in the requirements for knowledge of English language from 2025 it is planned to abolish all existing quota categories within the framework of the scholarship.
