Olzhas Suleimenov appointed head of Cultures Rapprochement Center

Olzhas Suleimenov was appointed the head of the State Museum “Center for the Rapprochement of Cultures”.

Previously, the Center for the Rapprochement of Cultures was headed by Karl Baypakov. The Center was established in 2016. Its main activity is identification, collection, acquisition, storage and promotion of historical and cultural heritage, conducting scientific-educational activities and research. All this is aimed at preservation of national heritage, including cultural heritage objects of Kazakhstan.

Olzhas Suleimenov, born May 18, 1936 graduated from the geological survey department of the Kazakh State University in 1959, with an engineer-geologist qualification. 

In 1959 he enrolled in the A. M. Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow, department of poetic translation, interrupted his studies in 1961.

In 1962-1971 he contributed to Kazakhstanskaya Pravda newspaper, was editor-in-chief of the script-editorial board of the Kazakhfilm studio, head of the journalism department in the Prostor magazine. In 1971-1981 - Secretary of Kazakhstan writers’ Union.

In 1975 he published his controversial book AZ i IA. The book was banned, and the author was not published for 8 years and practically stopped writing poetry.

In 1981-1984 – he headed the State Committee of the Kazakh SSR on cinematography, in 1984-1992 - first secretary of the Board of the Writers' Union of Kazakhstan, secretary of the board of the USSR Writers Union, since 1992 - Honorary Chairman of Kazakhstan Writers’ Union.

In 1989 he became the initiator and leader of the popular movement Nevada – Semipalatinsk, from 1995 to 2001 - Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Italy (Rome) and concurrently to Greece and Malta.

Since 2001, he has been Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to UNESCO.
