Tokayev meets the Executive Director of UNEP

The Chairman of the Senate Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev met with the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Eric Solheim, the Senate press office reported.

The Senate Speaker noted the high level of cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN and expressed gratitude to UNEP for active participation in Expo-2017 in Astana. "Kazakhstan is absolutely committed to the goals and objectives of the United Nations, stands for strengthening the central role of the Organization in addressing urgent problems of our time. The UN Security Council, to which Kazakhstan has been elected as a non-permanent member, is the main mechanism for preserving peace and security," Mr. Tokayev said.

The officials exchanged views on ways to coordinate common efforts in ensuring environmental security within the UN. They also stressed the importance of implementing the main provisions of the Paris Agreement on climate change. The Chairman of the Senate confirmed the readiness of Kazakhstan, which ratified this document in a timely manner, to take an active part in the implementation of its provisions.

During the meeting, the sides discussed prospects for cooperation with the UN within the framework of the International Financial Center of Astana, the International Center for the Development of Green Technologies and Investment Projects "Energy of the Future".

Mr. Solheim expressed his intention to actively support the process of Kazakhstan's transition to a "green" economy and spoke for strengthening regional cooperation in environmental issues.

Mr. Tokayev thanked for the decision of the UNEP Secretariat to open the Subregional Office in Almaty, which will help turn this city into a regional UN hub for multilateral diplomacy.
