The first flock of flamingos arrive in Aktau

22 time viewed

Thousand of flamingos returning from warm regions arrived on the Caspian sea embankment, Committee of forestry and wildlife of the Agriculture ministry says.

The vast majority of our birds spend winter in warmer distant countries, often many thousands of kilometres from the nesting site.

Flamingo breeds in Kazakhstan only in a few places such as in the North-Eastern corner of the Caspian sea, lakes Shalkarteniz and Teniz.

50-100 thousand flamingos spend summer in Kazakhstan. Most of them fly on lake Teniz, while the rest (probably 10 - 20 thousand) are approximately equally distributed between nesting sites in the Caspian sea and Shalkarteniz.

Quantitative surveys of flamingos conducted at their wintering sites on the Caspian sea show that about 10,000 flamingos spend the winter on the Lenkoran coast and approximately the same number on the Turkmen coast. We can assume that these 20,000 birds belong to those that nest on the North-Eastern shores of the Caspian sea and in the region of Shalkarteniz.
